I HAVE A POSITIVE PREGNANCY TEST AND I AM ENROLLED IN THE TRICARE OVERSEAS PROGRAM (TOP) - HOW DO I RECEIVE CARE IN MY CURRENT LOCATION?

For TRICARE Prime Overseas º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø:
Most of your care is provided/coordinated by your primary care manager (PCM) in your enrolled location. This may be through a military clinic/hospital or a civilian TRICARE Network Provider. For pregnancy care at a network provider, your PCM will submit a referral for authorization to International SOS, the TOP contractor. For more information, visit .

For TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø:
Pregnancy care is coordinated by International SOS' TOP Medical Team, who will issue authorizations for pregnancy care to a TRICARE-authorized health care provider. The medical team will ask questions about your current and past pregnancy experiences so that the right support is provided during your pregnancy journey. Information may be gathered during a call, via email or following your completion of the 'Pregnancy Questionnaire'. The TOP Medical Team is available 24/7 to assist you throughout your pregnancy journey.

HOW DO I CHOOSE MY GYNECOLOGIST, OBSTETRICIAN, OR MIDWIFE?

International SOS makes recommendations on the standard and safety of local prenatal and delivery providers. Recommendations may change based on your medical status and country location. For some country locations where local care is not endorsed, you will be recommended to travel to an approved location. For more information on this, please see .

How Can I Find Providers In My Location?

  • TOP Provider Search Tool: You can search for a provider in your location using this tool. Just select your region, country and your TRICARE location to find the recommended TRICARE Network Providers near you.
  • Call your TOP Regional Call Center and speak to a member of the team.
  • TRICARE Prime beneficiaries should contact your Primary Care Manager for referral submission. TRICARE Prime enrolled beneficiaries are able to change to another in network provider if desired when care is authorized.

ONCE MY PROVIDER IS CONFIRMED, HOW IS MY CARE AUTHORIZED?

International SOS will send the necessary authorization documents to the TRICARE-authorized provider, with a copy to your email address (your authorizations are also viewable in the MyCare Overseas™ Beneficiary App).

WHAT TESTS ARE COVERED FOR PREGNANCY CARE?

MY PREGNANCY IS HIGH RISK, WILL THAT CHANGE THE WAY MY CARE IS AUTHORIZED, AND THE TREATMENTS COVERED?

Yes, care coordination may change based on your country location and medical status. For TRICARE Prime enrolled beneficiaries continued care is coordinated by your MTF PCM. If you are enrolled to a TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas location, please contact your TOP Regional Contact Center to discuss the options available. Additional high risk/other care recommendations from your treating doctor will be assessed for authorization under the TRICARE benefit by the medical team to determine if they are suitable in your geographical location.

Progesterone Therapy: If your pregnancy is identified as high risk for premature birth, your treating doctor may prescribe Progesterone Therapy. This is a TRICARE-covered benefit for pregnancy between 16 and 36 weeks of gestation. To discuss authorization for Progesterone Therapy, please call your TOP Regional Call Center (the TOP Medical Team is available 24/7). TRICARE Prime Overseas beneficiaries should contact their Military Treatment Facility (MTF) Primary Care Manager (PCM).

TRAVELING FOR PREGNANCY CARE

º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø enrolled to TRICARE Prime Remote may be in a country where the local health care is not recommended for pregnancy care. In these situations, there are options available which involve travel to a country and city location endorsed as suitable, to manage the medically necessary pregnancy care. For more information on how this care is coordinated, please download the .

Other situations may require you travel to care from your enrolled sit, for maternal and fetal wellbeing, please discuss these options or concerns with your TRICARE Prime PCM (TRICARE Prime) or TOP Regional Contact Center (TRICARE Prime Remote).

AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS FOR PREGNANCY Generally, pregnant women cannot fly internationally (and in some cases domestically) after 34 weeks of pregnancy but this depends on the airline requirements for pregnant passengers. You are recommended to have flown to your labor and delivery location prior to 34 weeks gestation. Certificates stating fitness to fly will be requested by the airline and may be requested at time of check-in and aircraft boarding. To fly commercially after 28 weeks, you will need the following certificate information (although not limited to the following) may apply:
  1. Information for the airline of your estimated due date
  2. Single / twin / other multiple pregnancy
  3. That the pregnancy is without complication(s)
STORK NESTING Stork nesting, which is accessing care at a military medical facility in a different country or city location may be available to you. Contact with your TOP Regional Call Center to discuss potential stork nesting options that may be available to you.
DELIVERING IN THE U.S. If you are planning to deliver in the United States, please see the following guidance depending on your enrollment;
  • TRICARE Prime, discuss with your PCM for an approved referral to receive US based care. This care requires US justification for TOP Prime enrolled by the TRICARE Area Office.
  • TRICARE Prime Remote, call the TOP Regional Call Center to discuss delivery options. Approval for the medical travel for labor and delivery will be requested from the TRICARE Area Office.

Can I receive childbirth and breastfeeding support services if I am planning to give birth in the U.S.?
Yes, however, you will still need to enroll into the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration (CBSD) by getting in touch with International SOS. Please call your TOP Regional Call Center.

Before attending any appointments for Childbirth or Breastfeeding Services, as an enrolled TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote beneficiary you must get confirmation from International SOS that you are eligible for CBSD services and register.

I would like to use a provider that is not currently part of the TRICARE Network in the U.S. location where I plan to give birth, what should I do to ensure I can use their services?
Beginning January 1, 2025, CBSD certified labor doulas (CLDs) in the U.S. must have a signed agreement, with the US based contractor so services are reimbursed. If you use a CLD who is not a TRICARE Authorized provider, you will not be reimbursed. CLDs in the U.S. are required to file claims and accept TRICARE payment as payment in full.

I AM AN ADSM ENROLLED IN A TRICARE PRIME REMOTE OVERSEAS LOCATION, WILL THAT CHANGE THE RECOMMENDED TRAVEL FOR MY PREGNANCY?

  1. Airline requirements exist as above for Active Duty Service Member (ADSM) beneficiary travel during pregnancy.
  2. For Prime Remote ADSMs, the recommendation for labor and delivery will be guided by the Command and Regional TRICARE Area Office (TAO). In some locations, travel to a military health care provider may be recommended.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MATERNITY AND MIDWIFERY CARE?

The TRICARE benefit covers both TRICARE Prime Overseas and TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas enrolled beneficiaries receiving midwifery services when that care is received within the hospital environment and is overseen by the treating obstetrician.
